Centrum Amsterdam Noord

The Amsterdam North area is made up of a blend of characteristic villages, small neighbourhoods and typical Dutch dikes all located to the north of the IJ river. Its current population of 90,000 is certain to rapidly increase to 130,000, expanding this urban district to the size of a small city.

Rather than giving the impression of a true city, however, the North today has no actual heart. Amsterdam North’s central area comprises no more than a mono-functional shopping centre called Boven ‘t Y. A real heart is now being created for the area near the Buikslotermeerplein through the development of a modern urban centre, a new residential area, and an attractive area around the Noord-Zuidlijn railway stop bringing passengers to and from Amsterdam North through Amsterdam centre and on to the south.

Total Project
The Amsterdam North Centre (Centrum Amsterdam Noord, or CAN) will be a place for all to work and reside, as well as shop and enjoy sports activities and entertainment facilities. This area, situated in a unique position between green and city, will boast a wide range of activities. The entire CAN project involves approximately 3,000 residences, 150,000 m2 of office space, 60,000 m2 of mixed-use space, 28,000 m2 of space for retail activities as well as various cultural and leisure facilities, the railway station for the Noord-Zuidlijn and a wide range of parking facilities. The entire development is scheduled to take place over approximately 15 years. The urban development plan for the CAN project was developed by Sjoerd Soeters.

Central area
The Boven ’t Y shopping centre, which currently stands on the area’s Buikslotermeerplein main square, will be expanded on the west side and see the addition of new shops and facilities. By allowing for both small-scale and large-scale retailers to locate their shops here the extension will complement the existing shops in Boven ’t Y. This harmonization will be strengthened by the seamless connection between the extension and the current shopping centre. With the addition of underground parking below the new shops, the excellent parking supply for the old centre will be adequately expanded to meet the requirements of the new centre. To balance out the complex, the eastern side of the shopping centre will also be improved upon through the addition of a large retail anchor and the doubling of the parking facilities on this side.
Multifunctional
To ensure the shopping centre gains a multifunctional quality, the centre will boast a rich mixture of cultural and leisure facilities in addition to new shops. Various residential types will also be added to the mix, including single-family residences (above the shops) that will feature front doors that are reached through a communal green inner courtyard, and small apartments for first-time buyers.
