Germany, Hamburg, Hafencity
Hamburg is Germany's second most densely populated city, with over 1.7 million inhabitants. The city is a significant commercial location with international links for its good geographical position.
The harbour is also now the biggest seaport in Germany. The new city quarter of 155 hectares named HafenCity will have typical city uses. The HafenCity can be reached by foot in a few minutes from the Hamburg town hall and main railway station. It directly connects the present city centre and will extend the centre by around 40%.
The ‘Überseequartier’ will be the new heart of the HafenCity quarter and will play a central role. In addition to 53,000 m² residential and 124,000 m² office space, there will be 65,000 m² of retail and gastronomy establishments in the north & southern part of the ‘Überseequartier’. The pier for cruise ships that berth in Hamburg is located at the South Quay. A cruise ship terminal with a hotel and congress centre will be constructed for this purpose. Moreover, a new science centre and aquarium next to the cruise terminal will be of significant importance for the tourists coming to the ‘Überseequartier’. The developers of this project, ING Real Estate and its partners – SNS Property Finance and Groß & Parnter – are seizing the opportunity to give Hamburg’s inner city a new imprint and set a new standard.
